What Veggies to Plant in the Fall

Yesterday I dug up all our potatoes, not that much because we have been slowly harvesting them as needed all summer. ( Note to self:  Plant way more potatoes next year! )  This was to make room in the garden for my next round of planting for the fall.   Because we have limited garden space I use the successive planting method.  As soon as one plant is done I clear the spot, rototill it and then plant something else.  This gives us tons of food in our small little garden.  There are many veggies that not only do well, but thrive in the cool weather.  I rototilled all my available space and planted Swiss chard, spinach, turnip greens, carrots, and lettuce.  It may be too late for the carrots to get big but I'm going to try. Today I'm planting turnips.  Turnips grow fast and like frost so they should be good.  Most greens can take frost as well so now is the time to  plant them.  I actually dislike salad, I know weird, but I love stir-fried and cooked greens.

Veggies to plant in the fall

  • beets
  • turnips
  • lettuces
  • spinach
  • kale
  • turnip greens
  • carrots
  • radishes
  • chard
  • broccoli Rab
  • peas
  • arugula
  • cabbage - already started sets
  • broccoli - already started sets

As you can see there are lots of possibilities to extend your harvest out.  And if you cover them when it really starts to freeze they will last even longer!
