Saving money on food is a big deal to me. Our food budget is one of the biggest expenses on our tight income so I make most of our food homemade and also am always looking for ways to save. Also I try to keep a good amount of food stored in case of emergencies or a downturn in my husbands job, which we have gone through several times. When I first started talking with North Bay Trading Co. I was really surprised at their prices. Especially for the products that they sell. They are super reasonable! But more than that I was surprised at the selection of dried foods they have. They produce dried foods in air dried, steam sterilized air dried, and freeze dried. Here is a little blurb about their company.
Established in 1987, North Bay Trading Co is a family business which delivers high quality food to commercial and retail customers. We use only 100 percent natural GMO free ingredients. Our products are generally low in sodium and a great source of vitamins and minerals. There are no artificial additives.
And they have such a huge selection! North Bay Trading carries dried fruits, wild rice, beans and lentils, vegetables, mushrooms, nuts, seeds, and trail mixes. They have over 50 varieties of air dried vegetables including 8 steam sterilized air dried vegetables. Plus 20 varieties of freeze dried vegetables. Their products would be great for backpacking, camping, and quick-and-easy eating right at home.
North Bay Trading sent me Several items for review
My favorite item that North Bay Trading sent me is the Air Dried Mixed European Mushrooms $13.38 5 oz (2.5 - 3 cup) retail bag. These not only were delicious used in recipes, but also they save me money. The reason why is that fresh mushrooms are so terribly perishable. If you don't use them up right away they go bad and then you have to throw them out. But with dried mushrooms you just rehydrate them as needed for cooking. I used them in a Salisbury steak gravy, and also a soup recipe. The rich mushroomy scent as I re hydrated them was amazing! Also I found that if you don't mind some liquid loss you can put them right into the liquid your cooking with and skip the re hydrating step.
The Petite Crimson Lentils 1.25 bag $3.75 they sent me were also delicious. I used them to make my first lentil salad and really enjoyed it! I love the color on them and they have a huge selection of different lentils HERE. North Bay Trading has a HUGE selection of beans, wild rice and lentils.
I love freeze dried strawberries in recipes, granola, or just to snack on so I was really pleased when they sent me a bag to try. It was delicious and the strawberry slices were large and in perfect condition. At $5.24 for a three cup bag it's a good deal.
North Bay Trading carries several soup mixes which would be great for camping, emergency storage, or just for quick dinners. I love soup on a crisp fall evening after raking leaves or stacking firewood. North Bay sent me their Whole Wheat ABC Pasta Veggie Soup Mix. I made my own beef broth from bones I buy at a local butcher and added beef chunks and it was wonderful. Do you know my children had never had alphabet soup? They thought it was so fun! A one pound bag is only $5.15 and makes about 24 cups of soup.
Last but not least I tried their Air Dried Mixed Veggies $6.08 per 8 oz bag. The mix contains Air dried carrots, onions, whole kernel sweet corn, celery, green beans, green and white leeks, green bell peppers, and red bell peppers. It was very good in soup and would be perfect to help make quick meals on busy days. Also it would be great to make storing veggies less bulky.
The quality of every one of these products was excellent. They all looked and smelled fresh and the food pieces were whole and not broken up and had vibrant colors. I would recommend this company to anyone looking for camping/backpacking, emergency preparedness, or quick meal preparation.

They don't list a very long shelf life on their products. Will repackaging in Mylar with oxygen absorbers extend the life?
