A Baking Day

Here is my weekly baking day.  I do this for three reasons.  First it's much healthier to eat homemade breads that contain good ingredients and no preservatives.  Second it saves us tons of money which is a huge consideration for us.  And third I'm a hearth keeper so I might as well bake good foods for my family.

Back in the good old days women had a day of the week they did all their baking.  I'm trying to bring back the tradition.  It makes sense because it saves us so much money.  I try to bake enough rolls and bread to get us through a week, and also some treats like cookies and such.  Today I baked my usual Old Fashioned Potato Rolls which always turn out perfect.  And I made Rich Bread, Hide it Cake, and cookies.  I didn't make any quick breads like coffee cake, but I think I'll make those today.  I really wish I had a double oven on baking day.  On a side note when the children came home from school they saw all the breads on the table cooling and were so funny.  Mama baked!  Mama baked! And then for snack they had fresh bread with butter and honey and my eldest son (who is a picky eater) said, "Momma this is the best bread  (it's whole wheat I try to sneak it in there), it is delicious!"  That makes it all worth while.

Hide It Cake, because you have to hide it from the men folk!

A finished baking day! Now we have all the rolls and bread for a week.

  1. I love baking! I bake everything for us. Bread, biscuits, cakes, pastries. The only thing I buy is Puff Pastry. I can make it, but it can be a bit of a palaver. I try to organise my "big bake", on Mondays. I usually bake a large batch of biscuits every couple of weeks, a cake almost every week, and all the bread and bread rolls we eat.

Weekends is when I make sourdough and long-rise, no knead breads. It is summer here, so the garden is in full swing and I don't always have Monday free for a full days' baking, so I do a bit every day.

I've been baking a lot of pies as my fruit trees did well this year. It's only their third season and all bar one plum tree fruited. Of course it was my favourite variety of plum that didn't fruit. sigh............ next year!

I'm glad you love to bake. I still get a buzz every time I pull a loaf or a cake out of the oven.

That is a beautiful haul on your table.

  2. It sounds like we are "kindred spirits" lol I would love to try sourdough but haven't done it yet. I'm so glad that your garden and fruit trees are doing well

  3. I love it! I also have a baking day which is normally Saturday. Rolls, biscuits, 2 loaves of breads, a cake or bundt or something similiar. Such a fun day and feeds us well for a week. Thanks for sharing.

  4. I bake bread every other day. I bake treats several times per week as well. It make my family happy and makes the house smell loved. I equate the smell of fresh homemade baking with love. I love my family so I cook and bake for them. Great post. Most people think its strange that I make everything from scratch. Thank goodness for the internet.

  5. everything looks wonderful!! beautiful blog!

  6. Lovely post and blog you have here. I bake often ~ all of our bread and baked goods. What a blessing to bake good, whole foods. :o)

"Hide it Cake"--aptly named, I am sure!

  7. Thank you for all the kind comments! It is so good to see other ladies that love to bake like me :)
