It's the Most Wonderfull Time of the Year!

Today I received my Baker Creek Heirloom Seed catalog  http://rareseeds.com/  !  This is the beginning and perhaps most fun part of gardening.  It is the time when you dream of new varieties to grow, envision the "perfect" garden, mentally taste delicious home grown tomatoes, and look forward to getting outside to dig/hoe/plant those little miracles called seeds.

I joyfully paged through the lovely photographs and descriptions of the hundreds of seeds they offer putting little stars next to the ones I am considering buying.   Baker Creek has some of the best seeds I have ever bought. I always order early because many times they are sold out by the time spring arrives.  And every year for the past few years they have sold out sooner and sooner.  If you are planning to order seeds or fruit trees this year I advise getting your order in early because the demand is exploding due to the economy.

Some early selections for my garden:

Ping Ting eggplant (I love eggplant)

Golden Beet

Chinese Lantern Gigante - flower

Green Nutmeg melon

Emerald Gem melon

Sweet passion melon

Tigger melon

Tomato Pepper

Red Marconi sweet pepper

purple Beauty sweet pepper

Sweet Chocolate sweet pepper

Saxa 2 radish

Rouge Vif D'Etampes pumpkin

Musquee De Provence pumpkin

Jarrahdale pumpkin

Tsar's Royal Gift tomato (in honor of our tsar creating president)

Black Icicle tomato

Black Cherry

Kiss me over the Garden Gate- flower

Ok I have to stop because this post will become too long!  The real problems is where the heck I'm going to plant all these!  Every year I want to try so much and still have my old standbys as well.  Here's hoping we have a better season this coming year for my tomatoes.

I always try melons and they almost always fizzles.  The only melons that have done well were the Moon and Stars red flesh, Tigger melon, and Orangeglo.  All of which I am going to try this coming year.  But I also just love musk melons and yet they never love me back.  I am unrequited!  Well we will see this year.  I have been preparing their bed since fall with high hopes.

  2. I got my catalog too!!! I need to figure out what I can put in to my first order. Our location is kind of up in the air (my husband is military), but I figure I can always save the seeds for later on.

  3. What do you do with your eggplant other than egg plant parmasian? I always wondered if I should plant some.

  4. I make just roasted eggplant in the oven, fried eggplant like zuccinie, and also Baba Ganoush which is a middle eastern dip. All very yummy, but I am the only one in the family who likes eggplant!
